Paul Kingsnorth: Portrait of a Recovering Environmentalist

VPRO produced a documentary, Paul Kingsnorth: Portrait of a Recovering Environmentalist, that I had the chance to watch this weekend.  Paul Kingsnorth, a writer from the United Kingdom and former environmental activist, is an intriguing figure.  I don’t remember how I was introduced to him but it’s not hard to find interviews and talks on YouTube.  I tried reading his novel, The Wake, a novel about a character living in the aftermath of the Norman invasion of 1066.  It is written using a vocabulary intended to evoke the world of the protagonist.  But having small children and late hours eventually cancelled that effort.  Still, my partial reading helped me to absorb more of his interest in the kind of storytelling he proposes for cultures in the midst of great upheaval.
